Leeds United sale would yield “ideal” replacement says pundit

Writing for Football Insider, former Leeds United frontman Noel Whelan reckons that one player the Whites should cash in on is £4.5million buy Adam Forshaw.

A difficult transfer window is envisaged for Leeds United as they look to push on from last season’s impressive 3rd place finish. Forshaw, brought in to the club from Middlesbrough in mid-January 2018, featured 30 times for Leeds across their 2018/19 Sky Bet Championship campaign in what was an injury-hit season.

In total, Forshaw has featured in 44 games for Leeds United since his move from Teesside. In his article, Whelan said that the Liverpool-born midfielder would command a “big fee” and that the Whites should really cash in on him.

With Leeds fans possibly worrying about a player leaving and a gap appearing, not so says Whelan. He says that the West Yorkshire side have someone in the wings who could easily step in to Forshaw’s boots – Jamie Shackleton.

The BBC Radio Leeds match day presenter, famous for his ‘GET INNNNS’, states “I think we also have the ideal ready-made replacement in Jamie Shackleton, who plays the central midfield role better than Forshaw. He has more energy and is better going forward and on the ball. He’s younger and better.”

Whelan then goes on to endorse the Leeds-born 19-year-old even further. He adds “For me, Shackleton for Forshaw all day long. I would get him starting next season, definitely.”

Shackleton made 19 appearances for Leeds United in the Sky Bet Championship, 24 across all competitions. He set up two goals vs Swansea and West Brom and largely impressed with both his engine and penchant for getting forward.
