Frank Lampard incredibly proud of Derby County

Derby County head coach Frank Lampard has told the club website that he is incredibly proud of the team ahead of the Sky Bet Championship final against Aston Villa.

When Gary Rowett left Derby and became the new Stoke City manager, not many expected the Rams to challenge for the play-offs this season. Even fewer thought they’d get into the top six when they appointed Frank Lampard as his replacement, a big name but someone who didn’t have experience of this very tough division.

But everyone in the club will have been delighted to prove the doubters wrong and make to the play-off final on Monday. Their season now comes down to one crunch match against Aston Villa with the winner being promoted to the Premier League. Ahead of what is such a massive game, Lampard made sure to tell the press that he was incredibly proud of the players who have been able to get the team so far.

He said: “It has been an incredible journey and it was a dream which was far away in that Reading game,”

“Looking back, the ups and downs that come with the Championship season, and the difficulties, the good moments, the bad moments; I am proud of this group, I really am.

“When you are tested at times, it shows the metal of what you have. The players reacted post Aston Villa in the league and I think the club and the fans did. I talked about it in that period about the fear and negativity.

“Since that, the support we have had and how the club has moved on, it’s credit to everyone involved.”
