Doncaster Rovers will lose club captain this summer

Doncaster Rovers head coach Grant McCann has told the Doncaster Free Press that they will be losing Tommy Rowe on a free transfer this summer.

The 30-year-old midfielder initially moved for Doncaster on loan from Wolves back in 2016. He would be one of their top performers during that spell and that earned him a permanent move later on that year. He has been a fan favourite ever since, making over 100 appearances and being named their club captain. Rowe had a great season this year, leading the South Yorkshire club to the Sky Bet League One play-offs before being eliminated in the semi-finals by Charlton Athletic on penalties.

Rowe missed the crucial penalty that knocked Doncaster out in those play-offs and it appears that will be his last kick for Doncaster. While he has been offered a new contract, McCann has revealed that it is unlikely that he signs a new deal with the club and will instead be heading elsewhere this summer. However, McCann has moved to reassure fans who will be disappointed with his departure by saying that he has already identified two potential replacements for Rowe.

He said: “Nothing is really materialising on that with Tommy,”

“He’s got a lot of clubs interested in him.”

“What I will say is that I’ve identified two players to bring in in that posiition so I’m focused now on bringing in two players in that position.”

“Having lost Herbie Kane and Tommy Rowe leaving, there will be two players coming in.”
