Frank Lampard reveals Derby County “looked at” signing Aston Villa star

Derby County manager Frank Lampard has revealed that the club “looked at” signing Tyrone Mings prior to his move to fellow Championship side and play-off finalists Aston Villa.

Frank Lampard has said that Derby County looked at the possibility of signing defender Tyrone Mings, before realising that a deal was not possible.

“We looked at him but it was nowhere near a deal we could do,” Lampard said (quotes via Birmingham Live).

“He’s had a big influence for them.”

And Lampard is right to say Mings has had a big influence since joining Aston Villa on loan in the January transfer window. Coming in at centre-back, Mings has helped plug Villa’s leaky defence, forming a strong partnership with fellow loanee’s Kortney Hause and Axel Tuanzebe.

The Bournemouth man has played 17 games since joining the club, netting two goals along the way as well as helping keep six clean sheets. Villa are hoping that Mings will be able to add to his appearance total next season. The Villans are keen to bring him back to Villa Park this summer if they win promotion to the top-flight.

However, they are likely to face competition for Mings’ signature this summer. Southampton have been credited with interest in the former Ipswich Town defender.

Mings could make a move away from parent club Bournemouth after a highly impressive stint with Aston Villa, with him being down the pecking order with the Cherries. A Championship play-off final win over Derby would see the club’s chances of securing Mings permanently boosted massively.
