Leeds United defender could be poised for long-awaited Scotland debut

Leeds United defender Liam Cooper could be in-line for a long-awaiting senior debut for Scotland with the player thought to be being considered for an international recall.

The 27-year-old defender has been out of the picture for the last two years since Gordon Strachan’s reign in charge of The Tartan Army.

According to reports by the Daily Record, new Scotland boss Steve Clarke has held talks with Cooper on a potential return to the international fold and it is thought that the player could be selected in the squad for the nation’s upcoming 2020 UEFA European Championship qualifiers against Cyprus and Belgium.

After overseeing a complete turnaround at former club Kilmarnock, new Scotland boss Clarke may be ready to shuffle up his squad with Cooper being one of those players who could benefit. The defender has enjoyed an excellent season with Leeds United which has seen him make 37 appearances in all competitions in which he has scored three goals.

Cooper received his first senior international call-up over three years ago for a friendly against Denmark before being included for games against Canada and Slovenia a year later. The player is yet to be handed his debut for The Tartan Army but with Scotland having conceded five goals in their last three games, it could be time for change under the leadership of new boss Clarke.
