Former Leeds United and Peterborough boss stuffed to the Gills

Steve Evans is back in football management with Gillingham, the Gills confirming that the former Leeds United and Peterborough boss will take the helm on June 1st.

Evans, who cut his managerial teeth with non-league Stamford back in 1994, has been out of football since being sacked by Peterborough near the end of January this year. It was a 52-game tenure as Posh boss, Evans being let go with the London Road outfit in a decent position.

He’s a larger-than-life character, and this was evident when saying that if former club Rotherham stayed up one year that he’d turn up to their last game in full beach attire. That game happened to be at Elland Road against Leeds United, a bet that Evans carried out.

Evans was then the first manager under Massimo Cellino to last a full season at Leeds United, taking over during of the 2015/16 Sky Bet Championship campaign. He negotiated 38 games in charge of the Whites, but more importantly avoided the Cellino axe that had swung with regularity up to that point.

As ever, Evans will walk in to an appointment where some fans are not convinced that the right decision has been made. It was the same at Leeds United, after that at Mansfield and then at Peterborough. That is something that club chairman Paul Scally has addressed.

Speaking on the club website, Scally said: “Steve is no fool, and neither am I to be fair, he is aware of comments against him from some supporters, about his reputation, about what people are saying about his past, but I would never entertain the prospect of bringing in a manager whom I thought was wrong for the Club, and although no manager comes with guarantees I can categorically say that Steve Evans is by far the best candidate for the role I have seen, and I intend to appoint him as Club Manager, he will commence his role on June 1st .
