Portsmouth are eyeing up moves for young Oldham Athletic defender George Edmundson and former Bristol Rovers captain Tom Lockyer, according to Portsmouth News.

League One side Portsmouth are eyeing up moves for young Oldham Athletic defender George Edmundson and former Bristol Rovers captain Tom Lockyer.

According to The Daily Mail, Rangers have had a bid rejected for young Oldham Athletic defender George Edmundson, Latics are now looking for more than the £450,000 for the hot prospect as they look to start a bidding war.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is very keen to sign George Edmundson.

The 21-year-old has apparently rejected the offer of a new contract to stay at Latics, with Rangers, Stoke City, Hull City, Sunderland and Preston North End in the race to sign him with Portsmouth.

The 21-year-old was named in the official PFA League Two Team of the Year this season. The youngster has made 54 appearances in all competitions and he is entering the final year of his contract at Latics.

George Edmundson is highly regarded at Boundary Park and he won Oldham Athletic Community Trust Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards at the club’s awards evening.

Portsmouth are also looking to sign former Bristol Rovers captain Tom Lockyer.

The 24-year-old appeared 284 times for Bristol Rovers and scored seven times since emerging through their youth ranks.

Last season, Tom Lockyer made 48 appearances and netted four goals, as Bristol Rovers finished 15th in League One.

It is believed that Portsmouth are amongst a list of clubs chasing the Welsh defender, with competition from the Championship, including Nottingham Forest.
