Bristol City among “a host of clubs” in pursuit of centre-back, says Lee Johnson

Speaking on the Sound of the City radio show on Monday night, Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has said that he is interested in bringing loan centre-back Tomas Kalas this summer.

Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has said that the club are looking at bringing loan centre-back Tomas Kalas back to the club this summer after his loan deal expired at the end of the season.

Kalas enjoyed a thoroughly successful spell at Ashton Gate this season, playing in a total of 41 games across all competitions. He formed a strong centre-back partnership with Robins star Adam Webster, also playing frequently alongside Jake Wright when Lee Johnson utilised a three at the back system.

Now, Johnson has said that he would “love” to have Kalas back at Ashton Gate next season, admitting they are one of a number of clubs interested in securing his services.

“It’s difficult to talk about that one. Obviously, he’s not our player,” Johnson said when asked about bringing back The Czech defender.

“I’d love to sign Tomas. We’re in a host of a number of clubs after Tomas. He’s a quality player and that doesn’t come cheap.”

Johnson is hoping that Kalas’ relationship with himself and the Bristol City squad could help them in their efforts to bring him back to the club, bit admitted that financially, it could be a difficult one to pull off.

“But saying that he really enjoyed his time here. I think we’ve got a great relationship, in terms of me and him – he understands that he had a great relationship with Webster or Wright, and those connections are there.

“I’m hopeful but it’s a tough one because it won’t be cheap.”
