While it was expected, it is a huge blow for Swansea City to lose Graham Potter as their head coach.
Ever since arriving at the club last summer from Sweden, he was able to give the club a lot of positivity in what were quite miserable times. The club’s financial woes and relegation from the Premier League should have led to a fan rebellion but Potter being able to bring in young players successfully and the team playing in a good manner kept fans happy.
Now though he will be heading to the Premier League as Brighton noted how good he was at Swansea and made him their top target. But this means Swansea need a new manager and that person will have to deal with those same financial problems and the potential loss of their top players. Here are five people who may be stepping up to the hot seat.
Cameron Toshack
The name may sound familiar because he is the son of former Wales manager John Toshack. Cameron however has been building a good reputation for himself as the Swansea U23s manager and is responsible for many of the youngsters who are now key players in their first team. This appointment is risky because of his lack of experience but he would have a good shot at keeping those young players which is crucial to Swansea’s future success.
Billy Reid
Another member of the coaching staff at Swansea, though Reid was the assistant to Potter. In the immediate aftermath of the Potter appointment, we don’t know if Reid will be following him to the South Coast. As he’s managed before, at Scottish side Hamilton, this may seem like a good choice for Swansea if they want to try and keep some continuity.
Leon Britton
Britton is one of the most popular and revered Swansea players of recent years and he has even been the manager, being the caretaker before Carlos Carvalhal took charge. He left after that spell to carry on playing and is currently at Llanelli Town. But he would definitely be persuaded to take the helm if Swansea wanted him to though his lack of experience may put them off.
Ryan Giggs
The Manchester United and Wales legend has been linked to the Swansea job a lot but is this the time? He is currently the Wales manager though his spell has been seen underwhelming by many after the successes of Chris Coleman. This approach would only work if Giggs was keen to get out of the Wales job and with his only spell in management being a popular caretaker stint at Manchester United, the experience questions come into play again.
Gary Rowett
Once one of the most rated managers in the EFL, a very poor spell at Stoke has seen him forgotten by most fans. It’s not that fair to judge him on one poor reign when he has had success with lots of other clubs and with Swansea looking at a lot of options that have a lack of experience in this division, Rowett serves as a very different option who may work out very well for them.
