Sheffield Wednesday interested in Wigan Athletic midfielder that is not Nick Powell

Sheffield Wednesday are interested in signing Sam Morsy from Wigan Athletic according to a report from Sky Sports News journalist Lyall Thomas.

Earlier in the summer, it was reported that the Owls were interested in signing Nick Powell from Wigan. There was no surprise there as he had been one of the best performers for the Latics over the last few years and was key to their promotion from Sky Bet League One back in 2018. But it appears that Wednesday are going to lose that battle with a report today saying that Stoke City are close to wrapping up a deal for the former Manchester United man.

With that news, Wednesday are planning to move onto a new target and they are continuing to look at signing a player from Wigan. This time they are looking at Morsy, an Egypt international was found playing alongside Powell for most of the season. The 27-year-old midfielder signed for the Lancashire club back in 2016 though it did take a while to make an impact. He has been their team captain since August 2017 and was been a big player for the club under Paul Cook’s management.

Wigan may feel confident at keeping Morsy because he does still have two-years left on his contract but there will still be some fear he could leave. Morsy would have a better chance of playing in the Premier League if he moved to the promotion chasing Owls and he is familiar with the area having played for Chesterfield and Barnsley in the past. But first Wednesday would need to come in with a good offer to sign him.
