Oxford United snap up Wolves youngster

Oxford United have signed Kevin Berkoe from Wolves on a free transfer as confirmed by the club website.

The 17-year-old left-back, but can also be deployed at right-back, arrived at Molineux from Chelsea in 2017 and was hoping to progress through their academy and break into their first team. However, that didn’t happen, with the youngster instead playing in their U18s side and getting released this summer when the club decided they didn’t think he would be able to progress further with them.

But Oxford moved in to make Berkoe their first signing of the summer, signing him on a one-year deal. While it’s difficult to tell if he will be put into the Oxford first team straight away or if he will have prove himself in the Oxford developmental team first, there is plenty of hope that he will be able to show plenty of talent and that he will show that both Chelsea and Wolves missed out by releasing him.

Following the signing, Oxford head coach Karl Robinson said: “It’s an exciting signing for us. Look at his pedigree and you can see he has a lot of ability and now he has to chance to push on and force his way in to the first team here. He is quick, technically very good and I know there were a number of clubs looking at him so we are really happy that he sees his future at Oxford. He has Josh Ruffels ahead of him and Michael Elechi coming through as well so we have good competition in that position which is really encouraging.”
