Colchester United interested in out-of-contract Ipswich Town goalkeeper

Colchester United are interested in Ipswich Town’s out-of-contract goalkeeper Dean Gerken.

The 33-year-old is leaving the Tractor Boys when his contract expires next month and is being linked with a return to the U’s, as per a report by the Daily Gazette.

Ipswich have released their retained list today which sees the likes of Gerken, Grant Ward, Jordan Spence and James Collins all moving on, as reported by The72 earlier.

Gerken joined Ipswich in 2013 and has since played over 100 games for the Blues. He made 18 appearances this season as they relegated from the Championship.

The Essex-born shot stopper started his career as a youngster at Southend United before switching to Colchester in 2002. He broke into their first-team in 2004 and helped them gain promotion to the second tier in 2006.

Gerken played 127 times for the Essex club but left in 2009 to join Bristol City for an undisclosed fee. He went onto play 60 games for the Robins prior to his move to Ipswich six years ago.

A return to Colchester this summer would be fitting to Gerken as it is where he first made his name. John McGreal’s side finished 8th in League Two last season and will be looking to get into the Play-Offs in the next campaign.

The U’s currently have Dillon Barnes and Rene Gilmartin as their current goalkeeping options but bringing Gerken back for his experience could be a really shrewd move by them.
