Blackburn Rovers could still move on ‘keeper despite contract extension

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has said that ‘keeper Jayson Leutwiler could still make a move away from Ewood Park, despite having his contract extended by a further 12 months.

Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler had a 12-month contract extension triggered by the club upon the end of the season, taking his contract with the club through to the end of next season.

However, Rovers boss Tony Mowbray has now told the Lancashire Telegraph the club could let him leave the club this summer.

Leutwiler was given a run in the starting eleven towards the end of the season, which Mowbray has said was to “see what he could do” before triggering his contract extension.

“We needed to see what he could do,” Mowbray said. The Canadian played five Championship games towards the end of the season, keeping two clean sheets along the way.

“I’m not going to stand in his way if he’s got options. The bottom line is that footballers want to play and if he comes to me and says he’s got an option from somewhere where he’s going to play then we won’t be hard to deal with.

“I felt the right thing to do was to take up his option and make sure we have the cover we require.

“He will compete with the goalkeepers we have and do what is right for us and for him.”

Leutwiler made only five appearances this season and has spent the majority o his time at the club playing second fiddle to David Raya. He has played a total of 10 games for Rovers since joining from Shrewsbury Town in 2017.
