Wigan Athletic and Preston North End eyeing up move for Newcastle United midfielder

Championship pair Wigan Athletic and Preston North End have both been linked with a loan move for Newcastle United midfielder Dan Barlaser.

Newcastle United youngster Dan Barlaser is on the radar of Championship pair Wigan Athletic and Preston North End, the Newcastle Chronicle has reported.

Barlaser is looking to gain more first-team experience in the 2019/20 season, after spending the 2018/19 season on loan with League One side Accrington Stanley. The 22-year-old featured heavily for John Coleman’s side, playing 48 games in all competitions, scoring three goals and picking up two assists along the way.

Now, the centre-midfielder could be set to have his first taste of Championship football. Wigan have been keeping tabs on Barlaser over the course of the season, and are ready to pounce to bring him in ahead of next season. Preston are also interested, but it seems that the Latics are leading the chase for the Turkish youth international.

Before any loan deal can be agreed, parent club Newcastle United are keen for the youngster to put pen to paper on a new deal. His current deal runs out at the end of next season.

Barlaser has spent most of his time in senior football out on loan in the football league, spending time with League Two side Crewe Alexandra as well as last season with Stanley.

He has played a total of three times for Newcastle’s first-team side, featuring heavily for the club’s Under-23s side. Barlaser has made 88 appearances for Newcastle’s second string side, picking up eight goals and 12 assists along the way.
