Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is very keen to sign young Oldham Athletic defender George Edmundson, who is attracting interest from a host of clubs.

Alan Nixon tweeted: “RANGERS. Gerrard taking a personal interest in doing deal for young Edmundson at OLDHAM.”

Latics have already rejected offers for the youngster with the likes of Rangers, Stoke City, Sunderland, Hull City, Preston and Fleetwood Town all eyeing up a move for the defender.

George Edmundson follows the footsteps of Burnley and England defender James Tarkowski, both coming through the youth ranks at Boundary Park.

The 21-year-old was named in the official PFA League Two Team of the Year this season. The youngster has made 54 appearances in all competitions and he is entering the final year of his contract at Latics.

George Edmundson is highly regarded at Boundary Park and he won Oldham Athletic Community Trust Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards at the club’s awards evening.

The centre-back is a product of the Oldham Athletic Academy, and has earned his place as a first team player due to his performances during the 2017/18 season. He enjoyed a successful loan spell at AFC Fylde before being recalled due to injuries in the squad. He returned to the club and made 13 appearances for Latics and showed the defensive qualities he possesses and leadership in a young defence at times.

In the summer, Oldham Athletic announced that young defender George Edmundson has signed a two-year contract extension with the club. The defender’s contract runs until the end of the 2019/20 season.
