Manchester United said “very hot” in pursuit of Stoke

According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon on his personal Twitter feed (below), Manchester United are showing “very hot” interest in Stoke City’s Nathan Collins.

Stoke City were relegated from the Premier League last season after finishing in next-to-bottom with 33 points and a worse goal difference than Swansea City.

Their first season in the Sky Bet Championship showed the Potters that life was going to be an adjustment for them. A 3-1 opening day defeat against a resurgent Leeds United set the tone for their campaign, one where they finished 16th on just 55 points.

That total was 19 points away from the play-offs and just 15 points from the relegation places. There were, however, bright spots in Stoke’s season and one of those was youngster Collins.

He primarily starred for the Under-23s at the Britannia Stadium, featuring in 15 Premier League 2 games and racking up 1,289 minute on the pitch.

However, and more importantly, he also made the breakthrough into the first-team set-up. He featured three times (125 minutes) for Stoke in this season’s Sky Bet Championship campaign, playing in games against Swansea (26 minutes), Middlesbrough (90 minutes) and Norwich (9 minutes).

It is likely that the Irish youngster caught Darren Fletcher’s eye when starring in the Stoke Under-23’s 3-1 victory over the young Red Devils in mid-February.

It will be a summer of rebuilding for both Manchester United and Stoke City ahead, it looks like United already have their eyes on one prize that they’d like to bring aboard in Nathan Collins.

Whilst it is unlikely that he’d make it to the first team picture straight away at Old Trafford, the Red Devils have shown a willingness to promote youth when the time proves right.
