Barnsley and Forest Green Rovers eyeing up move for 26-year-old free agent

HITC Sport has reported that newly promoted Barnsley and League Two side Forest Green Rovers are considering a move for goalkeeper Adam Smith, who is available on a free transfer after his departure from League One side Bristol Rovers.

Goalkeeper Adam Smith’s departure from Bristol Rovers was announced on their club website last week, with his contract at the Memorial Stadium expiring ahead of the start of the summer transfer window.

Now, newly promoted Barnsley and Forest Green Rovers – who missed out on a spot in the League Two Play-Off Final after losing to Tranmere Rovers – have been linked with a move for the free agent shot-stopper.

Both the Tykes and Rovers are in the market for a new man in between the sticks ahead of the 2019/20 season. Barnsley’s star ‘keeper Adam Davies is attracting interest from Championship sides after a strong season, in which he earned a place in the PFA League One Team of the Year.

Forest Green will need to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer after Lewis Ward’s loan deal from Championship side Reading expired upon the end of their season.

Smith has struggled to nail down a place in the Bristol Rovers starting 11 since joining from Northampton Town in 2017. He enjoyed a stint in the starting 11 during the 2017/18 season, but only featured for the Gas five times in League One this season, keeping no clean sheets along the way. Brentford loanee Jack Bonham started in between the sticks for Rovers 46 times this season, keeping an impressive 18 clean sheets.
