Wolves trying to beat Newcastle United to signing of West Brom striker

Wolves are trying to beat Newcastle United to the signing of West Bromwich Albion’s Salomon Rondon according to a report from the Daily Mail.

While Rondon is contracted to West Brom, he has not been at the club this season. In order to get him off the wage bill while they were in the Sky Bet Championship following their relegation in 2018, they loaned him to Newcastle United with Dwight Gayle heading to the Hawthorns in return. Rondon ended up being a top striker while at St James Park, scoring 15 goals in 38 appearances for the Magpies. This meant they wanted to bring him back to the club after his loan ended.

That’s why West Brom losing to rivals Aston Villa in the play-offs was such good news for Newcastle. This meant a relegation clause in his contract was activated meaning they could sign him for a fee of £16.5m. However there has been a delay in Newcastle pursuing the deal. Before Newcastle head coach Rafa Benitez can get on with signing some players, he is set to have a meeting with owner Mike Ashley about his future.

This means Wolves are looking to step in as they are looking to sign some competition for Raul Jimenez. This would be galling for the Baggies. Wolves are their most fierce rivals and following the pain of losing in the play-offs, seeing one of their top players move the short distance to them without them being able to do a thing due to the release flaw would be just salt in the wound. But it could happen if they move quickly.
