According to a report from Portuguese outlet Record, Championship side Nottingham Forest will not be activating the option to sign loan player Diogo Goncalves on a permanent basis for £18 million.
Reports from Portugal have stated that Benfica winger Diogo Goncalves will not be making his loan move to Nottingham Forest permanent this summer after he returned to Portugal following the end of his loan deal.
The club announced their retained and released list earlier this week, where it was confirmed that he had returned to Benfica following the end of his deal. Forest do have an option to bring Goncalves back to the club on a permanent basis for a club record fee of £18 million.
But, unsurprisingly, after a disappointing season on loan at the City Ground, Nottingham Forest will not be looking to pursue this option. Goncalves joined the club last summer as part of a double deal including Joao Carvalho, who joined from Benfica on a permanent basis for a club record fee.
22-year-old Goncalves started only one Championship game over the course of the season, making six substitute appearances in the league. He played three times in the EFL Cup as well but failed to score a goal or provide an assist in his 10 total appearances for the club.
The attacker will return to Benfica in the hope that he can add to his 13 appearances for the club. However, with Benfica’s young attacking quality, it seems unlikely that the Forest flop will be making inroads on the first-team any time soon.
