Mansfield Town have terminated the contract of David Flitcroft as manager of the club after being beaten by Newport County in the play-offs and is replaced by academy manager John Dempster, confirmed by the club website.
League Two side Mansfield Town have terminated the contract of David Flitcroft as manager of the club after being beaten by Newport County in the play-offs and is replaced by academy manager John Dempster.
After failing to secure promotion to League One on the final day of the season against MK Dons, they then lost on penalties to Newport County in the play-offs having drawn both games.
Mansfield Town chairman John Radford told the club website: “It is with a heavy heart that we part company with David and his staff, however, the decision has been made with the best interests of Mansfield Town Football Club in mind.
“Despite a season of progress, we were unable to fulfil our primary objective of earning promotion to League One, despite having a number of games to achieve this ambition.
“We thank David and his staff for their tireless endeavours and part ways amicably. David and his staff have been highly professional throughout their tenures and we wish them genuine success in the future.”
Academy boss John Dempster has been named manager, with Flitcroft’s backroom staff also leaving the football club which includes Greg Abbott and assistant manager Ben Futcher. John Dempster previously had a temporary spell in charge of Mansfield Town in 2016 and played for Mansfield Town for four years from November 2011.
Mr Radford has full faith in new Mansfield Town manager John Dempster as he told the club website: “In John, we have a man who is considered to be one of the brightest and most innovative young coaches in football.
“His success with the youth team over the past few seasons has been remarkable and he now deserves the opportunity to manage the first team.
“John will have our full backing. He is appointed as manager of a club which is widely considered as one of the best operations in football.

Joke of a decision. Sorry, but these things take time and just ‘cause we didn’t get promotion in a game of fine margins you don’t chop & change… could be more detrimental to the club!

Nice bloke but couldn't get the players up for the big games and went far too defensive.
I got behind him all the way but don't fall out with this decision.
Thankyou David and good luck.
