Top 50 Players of the EFL – 35th: David McGoldrick (Sheffield United)

Sheffield United striker David McGoldrick has been voted by you as the 35th best player in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that McGoldrick is the 35th best player in the Football League. This is the first time that he has been on the Top 50 Players countdown.

I don’t think many people expected McGoldrick to make an impact for United this season. The 31-year-old striker had been released by Ipswich Town and while that was a shock due to his good form for the Tractor Boys, most expected him to drop into Sky Bet League One. Instead, he was handed a trial with United and he was able to impress enough in that one week that he was handed a one-year contract with the club.

And he has been able to build on that one-week trial ever since, becoming one of the club’s best strikers. While it was Billy Sharp grabbing all the headlines, you cannot ignore all of the hard work McGoldrick did to make sure that the club captain could get those goals. And it’s not as if the former Nottingham Forest striker wasn’t able to get on the score sheet either. This season in his 45 appearances for the club, he was able to score 15 goals. This led him to oust Leon Clarke as a regular starter and now will be wanting a new contract so he can continue this form in the Premier League.
