West Brom remaining “upbeat” despite first leg defeat to Aston Villa

Aston Villa netted two second-half goals through Conor Hourihane and Tammy Abraham to put them 2-1 up against West Brom and into pole position for a spot in the Championship play-off finals.

West Brom went into the break 1-0 up thanks to yet another goal from striker Dwight Gayle, pouncing on an error from Glenn Whelan to put the Baggies ahead.

However, two goals in the space of four second-half minutes from Hourihane and Abraham made the scores 2-1 in favour of Aston Villa

While a one-goal deficit makes Aston Villa favourites to progress to the final, West Brom have the chance to turn it around at the Hawthorns – something which striker Jay Rodriguez has said that is keeping his teammates upbeat.

“Obviously we’re disappointed and it’s not what we wanted but we’re halfway,” Rodriguez said to the West Brom club website.

“We know what we have to do. We’ll pick the bones out of that, go back now, recover, and prepare for Tuesday.

“There are big key moments in the game that we’re frustrated with, but we can’t moan too much, we’ve got to prepare and go for it on Tuesday.

“We’ll go back to the training ground now and see what we need to put it right on Tuesday. We’re upbeat and like I said, it’s half-time. We’ve got a full game now to go and do what we need to do to get what we need.

“It’s not a result that’s come from a lack of hard work. The atmosphere here was great and it played a big part for them, I’m sure it will be the same at The Hawthorns.”
