Top 50 Players of the EFL – 47th: Aiden McGeady (Sunderland)

Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady has been voted by you as the 47th best player in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that McGeady is the 47th best player in the Football League. This is the first time that he has been on the Top 50 Players countdown.

It’s fair to say that McGeady had a bit of a bad reputation at Sunderland. He came in last season and he was part of the Black Cats side that were relegated from the Sky Bet Championship, a shameful side that were widely condemned in the Netflix documentary. While most Sunderland fans would have been happy to see everyone in that sold, released or even sacked, their wages and contracts meant that was not possible and new head coach Jack Ross would have to rehabilitate some of them.

And while McGeady may have been hated last year, he is now a fan favourite after being one of their best performers this season. During this season, he was able to score 14 goals in 39 appearances. His ability on the wings was one of the reasons Sunderland were able to break down the stubborn Sky Bet League One defences, a problem they often faced as many teams that came to the Stadium of Light would just park the bus. McGeady’s season is not over yet as he will be competing in the play-offs.
