Top 50 Players of the EFL – 48th: Matt Phillips (West Bromwich Albion)

West Bromwich Albion winger Matt Phillips has been voted by you as the 48th best player in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that Phillips is the 48th best player in the Football League. This is the first time that he has been on the Top 50 Players countdown.

It’s been interesting to follow the career of Phillips. While at Blackpool and even at QPR, he was a well liked player and feared by full-backs across the league. But he became a small fish in a big pond when he headed to West Brom in 2016 and failed to impress with the Baggies in that first season. You shouldn’t pile it all on Phillips though as West Brom were poor as a whole that season and ended up being relegated to the Sky Bet Championship.

But now that Phillips is back in the Championship, he has been returning to the form that made him famous. He has been very impressive as West Brom made the Championship play-offs, terrorising many full-backs in the process. He has even been able to get on the score sheet during this season, scoring five goals in 33 appearances. And with West Brom set to compete in the end of season lottery, Phillips may end up having a big say on whether or not the West Midlands side make a return to the Premier League.
