Top 20 Managers of the EFL – 10th: Alex Neil (Preston North End)

Preston North End head coach Alex Neil has been voted by you as the 10th best manager in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have found that you think Neil is the 10th best manager in the Football League. He has moved up three places on this last since last year.
While plenty of Championship teams are changing their managers in order to get to the top of the Sky Bet Championship, Preston is using the old fashioned tactic of sticking with their manager. And they have been rewarded as the Lilywhites have had another solid season where they did have a shot at the play-offs though that hope did end up dying out sooner than they would have wanted.
Like before, Preston were able to compete with teams that have much bigger budgets than them and were able to shock teams in the thick of a promotion race such as when they beat eventual league champions Norwich City back in February. And you can see how much Neil is valued by the interest in him and the reaction by the club to keep him. West Bromwich Albion reportedly wanted to appoint Neil as their replacement for the sacked Darren Moore. When this report emerged, Preston handed Neil a big contract to make sure he stayed at Deepdale. When a team does that to keep their boss, you know how important he is.
