Top 20 Managers of the EFL – 12th Garry Monk (Birmingham City)

Birmingham City head coach Garry Monk has been voted by you as the 12th best manager in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have found that you think Monk is the 12th best manager in the Football League. He is new to this list.
When Monk was appointed as the manager of Birmingham, he was probably told he was going to have plenty of money to spend on new recruits like the many failed managers before him. However, he was given a shock this season as Financial Fair Plays came in and placed them under a transfer embargo. While that was lifted, the Blues ended up in even more trouble as later on in the season they handed a nine-point deduction for breaching profit and sustainability rules.
If you look at the history of teams that get point deductions, it’s not a pretty one. Most of the time they ended up being relegated or at least come very close to it as the deduction takes them from safety right into the thick of it. However, even with this deduction, Birmingham were able to stay away from the worst of the relegation battle. They were able to get some good form which slowly pushed them back up the table and they never ended up involved in that ugly fight to stay in the league. Now Monk will look to push Birmingham onto the play-offs.
