Manchester United readying transfer raid on promoted Championship side

According to the Sun’s Alan Nixon, English football giants Manchester United are readying a raid on newly promoted Norwich City – their target being Ben Godfrey.

York-born 21-year-old Godfrey has been at the Canaries since mid-January 2015 when bought from York. However, it is his performances this season that have caught the eye, a season where he’s fully contributed to Norwich’s promotion to the Premier League.

He’s featured in 30 games for the Norfolk-based side, playing in both the centre-back positions. Not only has his defensive solidity and skills brought about attention, he’s also been productive at the other end of the pitch too with four goals and two assists.

Godfrey, according to Nixon, has been “recommended” to Manchester United by their former defender Rio Ferdinand – a player who knows more than a bit about being a centre-back himself.

Nixon says that Godfrey, who signed a contract extension until 2022 only last year, is in no rush to leave Carrow Road adding that he is “settled with Norwich” and that he “is not pushing to leave.” However, the lure of Manchester United is strong and would be very difficult for both player and club to resist any advance.

Nixon adds that Norwich will “want about £15million” for their defensive star, an amount well within the reaches of a club like United.

Norwich face their last Sky bet Championship game today against Aston Villa. It will be an exciting summer ahead for Canaries fans, yet with news such as this it may also be a summer of some apprehension.
