Walsall must concentrate on themselves and not think about other results

Walsall head coach Martin O’Connor has told the club website that they must concentrate on their own match rather than think about results happening elsewhere.

The Saddlers are currently 22nd in Sky Bet League One and need to beat Shrewsbury Town on Saturday to stand any sort of chance of staying in the division. In addition to this, if Walsall are to avoid relegation from the third tier they will need two of Plymouth Argyle, Southend United and AFC Wimbledon to lose alongside them winning.

This means while Walsall are playing Shrewsbury, many fans will be looking at their phones just as much as the match as they hope results line up their way. But manager O’Connor has warned against that sort of attitude amongst his players and has said that they just need to concentrate on getting the win as that is the one thing they can control.

He said: “From our point of view, it’s about focusing on what we do and what we can affect,”

“We can’t affect other results.”

“All we can do is give it our best against Shrewsbury and hopefully the powers that be look upon us and give us another year in League One.”

“Other results go for us, fantastic. If they don’t, we’re disappointed and we’ll have to lick our wounds.”

“It’s about putting a performance in against Shrewsbury, who are safe now.”

“They’ll want to relegate us and win because it’s a local derby. It’s all to play for.”

“It’s a great game to play in. But we have to play with our heads as well as our hearts.”
