Derek Adams speaks out on Plymouth Argyle departure

Plymouth Argyle announced the sacking of manager Derek Adams on Sunday night after their 5-1 defeat to Accrington Stanley, which saw them drop into the League One relegation zone.

Adams was relieved of his services as Plymouth Argyle manager after almost four years in the role. He helped the club to the League Two play-off final in his first season with the club in the 2015/16, where they were defeated by Wimbledon.

Next season, he guided them to a 2nd placed finish, winning promotion to League One. In his first season in League One, Argyle finished just outside the play-offs in 7th place. However, they have been unable to emulate anything like last season, leading to Adams’ sacking.

Now, in a statement released on the LMA website, Derek Adams has said he massively enjoyed his time with Plymouth, wishing them the best in their battle to stay up and for the future.

“I have had four very enjoyable years as Manager of Plymouth Argyle Football Club and I would like to thank the club, board and Chairman, for giving me the opportunity and supporting me throughout my tenure.

“I would also like to thank Paul Wotton and Kevin Nancekivell for their loyalty and tireless efforts.

“Reaching the League Two Play-Off Final at Wembley, in my first season, gave us the opportunity to build. In my second season, we had two memorable FA Cup games against Liverpool, before winning promotion to League One. And last season, we finished 7th in our return to League One, narrowly missing out on the Play-Offs. These are all high points in my Plymouth Argyle career, which I am proud to have achieved with everyone at the club.

“Finally, I would like to pass on my best wishes to the new Chairman, players, all the club staff and The Green Army for the remainder of the season and in the future.”
