Motherwell swoop to sign Cambridge United full-back

Ladbrokes Premiership club Motherwell have agreed to sign Cambridge United defender Jake Carroll once his contract with The U’s expires in June according to the club’s official website.

The 27-year-old former Republic of Ireland youth international will become The Steelmen’s third summer signing with the club having already signed Declan Gallacher and Liam Polworth from Livingston and Inverness Caledonian Thistle respectively.

It has been reported that Cambridge United left-back Carroll has agreed a two-year deal at Fir Park and he will officially become a Motherwell player on 1 July when he becomes a free agent.

Carroll started his career across the water with League of Ireland Premier Division club St Patrick’s Athletic before moving to England where he joined Huddersfield Town. The defender was loaned out to Bury and Partick Thistle during his time in West Yorkshire as he found first team playing opportunities with his parent club hard to come by.

An 18-month spell with Hartlepool United saw Carroll get 73 appearances under his belt before he opted to move to current club Cambridge United in January 2017.

The player has made 35 appearances in all competitions for The U’s so far this season while Carroll has a disciplinary record which he will be looking to clean up north of the border after picking up eight yellow cards and two reds this term.
