Steve Bruce reveals why Steven Fletcher and Liam Palmer were dropped from Sheffield Wednesday first team

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Steve Bruce has told The Star that he dropped Steven Fletcher and Liam Palmer from the Bristol City match as they needed a rest.

The Owls played very well in their 2-2 draw with Norwich City with Palmer showing his talent in that game and Fletcher getting on the score sheet, though it was in controversial fashion as it was alleged that he used his hand to help the ball go in. But while they played well in that game, neither were included in the squad for Easter Monday’s match against Sky Bet Championship play-off chasing Bristol City.

It turns out neither were needed in that game as goals from Barry Bannan and Lucas Joao helped them to a 2-0 win but many still wondered why neither player who has been in such good form were in the squad. Bruce has now said that they were not included so as they needed the rest after playing so many games for the club.

He said: “They had a well-deserved rest. They have been excellent and have played relentlessly for me.”

“It was important I had a look at Lazaar. He is a loan signing who came here and had a good start and then got injured.”

“He played okay against Bristol.”

“He tired a bit towards the second half but overall he has done okay. The ninety minutes will have done him good.”
