Luton Town star Collins on Nathan Jones’ controversial Stoke City switch

Luton Town’s star man James Collins has said that he and his teammates were left gutted by the departure of Nathan Jones in January.

Luton Town fans feared the worst when manager Nathan Jones departed the club to replace Gary Rowett as manager of Stoke City.

However, the Hatters are favourites to win promotion to the Championship, as they sit top of the League One table, four points clear of 3rd place Portsmouth and with a game in hand on 2nd place Barnsley.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Luton top scorer and League One player of the year James Collins has said that he was left both surprised and gutted by the departure of Nathan Jones.

“It did come out of the blue. We played Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup and we had a few days off because we didn’t have a game until the following week. When we came back in, he had spoken to Stoke. The majority of the lads were gutted, myself included.”

Collins went on to add that a 1-1 draw to Sunderland after Jones’ departure, the team were given a massive confidence boost by both their performance and the fans’ support.

“After that game at Sunderland, where we got a draw up there and 7,000 fans followed us up, that was the moment we knew we could keep going,” says Collins. “We knew we could really achieve something, even with Nathan gone.

“The squad did not change, nothing changed. We kept the same regimes. We quickly realised we could be successful. He was always in and around the training ground, even when Nathan was here. All the lads were really familiar and fond of him before he got the job anyway.”
