Wigan Athletic loan star the subject of £10 million bid from Premier League side

According to a report from The Sun, Chelsea have rejected a £10 million bid from Brighton and Hove Albion for Wigan Athletic loan star Reece James.

Brighton have had a £10 million bid for Wigan Athletic loan star Reece James rejected, The Sun has reported.

The young Chelsea star has been the subject of significant interest over the course of the season after an impressive loan spell in the Championship with Wigan Athletic. Crystal Palace have also been linked with a move for the youngster but it is their rivals Brighton that have reportedly made the first move.

The 19-year-old right-back has impressed massively with Wigan Athletic in his first season of senior level football. James has been a mainstay in Paul Cook’s side since arriving in the summer transfer window, playing in all 43 of Wigan’s Championship games so far. He has scored three goals and provided three assists along the way, featuring at defensive midfield as well in recent months.

The England youngster’s strong season saw him named in the Championship Team of the Season.

James has been tipped for a first-team chance at Stamford Bridge thanks to his strong performances over the course of this season, playing as a back up for Cesar Azpilicueta. But, as usually is with young players at Stamford Bridge, first-team opportunities can be hard to come by.

James is yet to feature for Chelsea’s first-team but has played frequently for the club’s Under-18s and Under-23s, making a combined total of 68 appearances for the young sides after breaking through the club’s academy.
