Brentford striker not a cheap option says journalist

Londoners Brentford have had something of a hit-and-miss season to press in the 2018/19 Sky Bet Championship campaign. They currently sit in 14th place on 54 points, 11 shy of the play-offs with just 12 points to play for.

However, whilst results may have been more miss than hit, that cannot be said for the Bees French striker Neal Maupay. The 22-year-old is amongst the league’s leading scorers on 23 goals, as well as weighing in with seven assists. With Brentford’s season essentially over, with Maupay looking at playing Championship football for another campaign, it is obvious that there are going to be suitors for his services.

One of those said to be interested in acquiring the lethal Frenchman is already relegated Premier League side Huddersfield Town. The Terriers will be rekindling their interest from earlier this season and are said to be entering a transfer tug-o-war with Championship sides Aston Villa and Middlesbrough.

However, Sun reporter Alan Nixon, in commenting on a retweet of a Twitter user musing about Huddersfield’s interest says that any party wanting the former France Under-21 international is not going to get him on the cheap. When it comes to a striker such as Maupay, whose value rests in the goals he’s scored, you’d obviously not expect to get him as a bargain buy.

Maupay signed for Brentford for £1.8million from Saint-Etienne ahead of the 2017/18 Sky Bet Championship campaign, a campaign that saw him score 12 goals and provide 5 assists in his first season of English football. Across two Championship campaigns the Versailles-born frontman has 35 goals and 12 assists, and that output comes at a price.

Even though Maupay’s attacking prowess comes at a price, a hefty price, it will be one that is entirely within Huddersfield Town’s range. Backed by Premier League parachute payments, they’ll want to splash out on a proven Championship striker, especially after their own strikeforce failed to fire in the Premier League.
