Leeds United open to offers for star player say Spanish press

When Leeds United signed Spaniard Samu Saiz from SD Huesca, it was safe to say that nobody had heard of him. Cue frantic Internet searches and YouTube hits.

What these initial searches would have gleaned is that Saiz had come up through the youth system at Real Madrid, before being released on a free transfer to UD Melilla.

Another free deal took the skillful attacking midfielder to Atletico Madrid, whence he bounced to Almeria, back to Atletico and then to Huesca.

His arrival in Leeds allowed Whites fans a glimpse of something that they’d been missing, that real threat in the playmaking position. His first season at Elland Road saw him hit nine goals and provide eight assists.

It was also a season that saw him serve a lengthy ban for spitting at an opponent in the FA Cup defeat to Newport County. That ban served, he returned but didn’t have that imperious swagger from before as Leeds stumbled from bad performance to worse.

This current campaign, even though he’d provided four assists, there were signs that his heart wasn’t in it, his mind elsewhere. Ultimately, that proved to be the case, with a homesick Saiz negotiating a half-season loan move back to Spain with Getafe.

However, despite debuting against Barcelona, and featuring in six La Liga games, Saiz has not become that presence that he/Getafe would have hoped for. He’s only played 228 minutes since his arrival, and has not featured in Getafe’s last nine games – four of these he’s not made the squad.

Now Spanish sports media site Marca say that Leeds United are ready to listen to offers from Spain for Saiz. Marca’s Juancar Navacerrada says that Saiz “will not form part of the payroll” for Getafe “next season and will return to Leeds.”

The article also hints that his time at Elland Road is all but over for Saiz. It says that Leeds “hope for offers from Spain to assess the final departure” of a player who expresses the desire to leave English football.
