Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has said in a Fan’s Forum published on YouTube that they will not be signing Sheffield Wednesday’s George Boyd this summer.
Boyd has been used a lot in Wednesday’s first team since Steve Bruce was appointed as their head coach but his future with the club is still in doubt. His contract is set to expire in the summer and the Owls are widely expected to be cutting costs due to the problems they have had with Financial Fair Play over the season which has restricted their activity in the transfer market. This means that Boyd could be on his way out of Hillsborough in the summer.
This has led to suggestions that Peterborough should go in for him should Boyd become a free agent. He is a former Posh player and was one of their top stars when they made it into the Sky Bet Championship and remains a popular figure at the ABAX Stadium. And with Peterborough having history for signing their former players back for another run, fans are wanting Boyd to come back.
But when asked about it at a fan’s forum, MacAnthony has said this most likely won’t be happening due to a mixture of wage budget concerns and allowing younger players to come through instead.
He said: No, we can’t have both of them [Boyd and Tomlin]. No disrespect to George but he’s 33 now, when you have players like Dembele and Maddison and that kind of talent, and Tomlin’s only 30, Boydie wouldn’t get in our team.”
