French Ligue 2 boss emerges as candidate for QPR job

Troyes manager Rui Almeida has emerged as a candidate for the vacant QPR job.

The Portuguese boss has done an impressive job in Ligue 2 and is being targeted by the Hoops, as per a report by Sports Witness.

QPR are in the hunt for a new manager to replace Steve McClaren. Other candidates consist of Tim Sherwood, Darren Moore and Gareth Ainsworth.

However, the London side may opt for a foreign appointment now with Almeida being linked. His side Troyes are currently 5th in the French second tier and battling it out for a promotion to the top flight. The 49-year-old joined the club in May and has a contract there until 2020.

Almeida started his coaching career with spells as the assistant manager of Portuguese sides Estoril and C.D. Trofense. He got his first taste of management when he joined Syria’s Under-23’s from 2010 to 2012.

He then left Syria to take up assistant positions with the likes of Panathinaikos, S.C. Braga, Sporting Lisbon and Zamalek SC.

Almeida then took up his second managerial role in France with Red Star and stayed there for a season before Bastia swooped in for him in 2017 during their Ligue 1 relegation battle. He couldn’t keep them up and left after their relegation but was handed a new job immediately by Troyes last year.

It would certainly be an interesting appointment by QPR if they go for Almeida. John Eustace will remain in caretaker charge until their new manager is found.
