Former Real Madrid, Newcastle United and Leeds United defender Jonathan Woodgate is being lined up as potential new manager of Middlesbrough, according to The Sun.

Club legend and former Real Madrid, Newcastle United and Leeds United defender Jonathan Woodgate is being lined up as potential new manager of Middlesbrough, if current boss Tony Pulis leaves the club.

Boro supremo Steve Gibson wants Tony Pulis to stay at the football club, but if he doesn’t it is believed he will turn to club legend Jonathan Woodgate.

Johnathan Woodgate is first team coach at Middlesbrough, where he has gained his experience and could be manager very soon.

Currently, Middlesbrough are eighth in the Championship but they only one point behind Derby County in sixth place. Tony Pulis’ side have the best defensive record in the Championship, they have just conceded 32 goals in 38 games.

Alan Nixon published in The Sun: “Gibson is still a huge fan of Pulis despite a growing amount of discontent among the supporters on Teesside.

“Pulis is heading for a second straight top six finish but is still unpopular. The Welshman, 61, will not be sacked but the pair will have crunch talks soon after the season ends.

“And coach Woodgate will get the nod if Pulis departs. He is from the Boro area and came back as a conquering hero in his playing days after his time with Leeds and Real Madrid.”

At the weekend, Middlesbrough were beaten 1-0 at home against Norwich City, Onel Hernandez’s brilliant second-half strike was enough to earn Norwich City all three points.
