Hernandez performance for Leeds United makes mockery of TOTS omission

Last week the EFL put out their Championship Team of the Season. As with any such offering, there’s bound to be controversy – indeed there was.

One of the biggest points of contention over who was left out came from Leeds United fans. These fans were upset, to the point of livid in some cases, over the omission of one man – Pablo Hernandez.

The 33-year-old Spanish midfielder is easily having his best season for the Whites, if not his best season for ANY of the clubs that he’s been at. Since his early January 2017 free transfer to Elland Road, Pablo has lit up Leeds.

With Leeds United fans complaining about his name being missing from the Championship Team of the Season, it was left to the Spaniard to do what he does best. For the popular Spaniard, his answer came on the field and through his football.

That brace took Pablo’s total to 12 goals for the season, placing him second in Leeds United’s season scoring list behind the 14 goals of Kemar Roofe. Yet, his contribution to Leeds’ promotion charge does not stop there.

He’s also added 11 assists in a season where he could very well hold on to his Player of the Year award at Elland Road from last season. Again, the above two goals only tell a partial story of Pablo Hernandez from yesterday, from over the season.

There’s his overall contribution away from the headline-grabbing goals. His play is a joy to watch, his range of passing extensive, his trickery on the ball something else. In one way, Pablo Hernandez is the player Samu Saiz wishes that he was.

Forget about being a Leeds United fan, sit back and look at it as a neutral, if that is at all possible. Put all the building blocks together, it’s not hard, and then say that Pablo Hernandez didn’t deserve a place in the EFL’s Championship Team of the Season.

We have a Millwall fan as one of our writers, he summarised Hernandez’s contribution yesterday as ‘pure class’. Thing is, you can’t really argue against that. As Pontus Jansson pointed out in his tweet:
