Swansea City set to trigger defender’s contract extension to stave off Aston Villa interest

Wales Online has revealed that Championship side Swansea City will trigger a one-year contract extension in centre-back Mike van der Hoorn’s contract, with Aston Villa reportedly considering a move.

It was reported here on The72 last month that Aston Villa were considering a move for Swansea City defender Mike van der Hoorn in the upcoming transfer window. But, Wales Online has claimed that to stop Aston Villa from making a move for the Dutchman on a free transfer, the Swans will trigger a one-year extension in van der Hoorn’s contract.

When the club triggers the extension, it will surely put a massive dent in Villa’s hopes of securing a deal. A fee of £10 million was mentioned during the January window and play-off hopefuls will surely only be able to conjure up that money if they win promotion back to the top flight.

Van der Hoorn may not be the only player to extend his deal with Swansea City in the coming weeks. The club is in talks over deals with highly sought after winger Daniel James and midfielder Leroy Fer as well. Manager Graham Potter stressed the importance of getting the club’s key players tied down, saying:

“The simple answer is yes, but the most crucial thing is that the team is improving and you have a group of players working together that are developing. I think you can see that.

“You look at Connor Roberts, Mike van der Hoorn, George Byers, Dan James, Bersant Celina, Oli McBurnie, there’s quite a few players that have increased in value I would say that have grown as players. That’s something for us to remember.

“In the ideal world you want everybody on five-year contracts with Real Madrid after them but it’s not always easy to get to that point.”
