Leeds United beat Manchester City to snap up rated youngster

It is not often that you can manage to get that in a headline (above) but Leeds United have beaten Manchester City to the capture of Sunderland youngster Morten Spencer – as evidenced by the youngster’s tweet below).

Yet beaten the Premier League giants they have. It was only in early February that Sun journalist Alan Nixon reported that the Citizens were interested in brining in the then 14-year-old Black Cats Academy ace.

Nixon speculated that the sum that City would be likely to pay was in the region of £200,000 for the England youth player who plays on the left-wing and as an attacking midfielder.

The youngster joins the Whites at a great time for youth football. The Under-23s have already won their league, and tomorrow play Burnley Under-23s for a place in the semi-finals of the Premier League Cup.

The former Sunderland youth player will likely start out in United’s Under-18 set-up, who are also going great guns in their respective league. He will be joining a youth set-up at Leeds United that is being reinvigorated and re-energised, this after being allowed to lay fallow under the ownership of Massimo Cellino.

As well as bringing in players from the continent like Hugo Diaz, Pascal Struijk and Kun Temenuzhkov, the Whites have also signed rated English youngsters such as Jordan Stevens, Lief Davis and Ryan Edmondson.

Not only did Leeds United beat away the interest of Manchester City, they also fought off their Championship rivals Middlesbrough as well. In landing young midfielder Spencer, Leeds might have one for the future on their hands.
