Aston Villa and Newcastle United are set to raid Brentford to sign Yoann Barbet on a free transfer according to a report from Calcio Mercato via the Birmingham Mail.

The Bees have done well signing relative unknowns from foreign countries and Barbet is one of their success stories. He signed for them for a reported £500K in 2015 from French side Chamois and has since made over 100 appearances for the club, either as a centre-back or sometimes filling in at left-back. But his contract is set to expire in the summer which means they are at risk of losing him on a free.

And it appears that a Premier League team is preparing to swoop in and sign him for nothing. Newcastle are currently watching the player closely and are plotting to make a move to sign him in the summer when his contract expires. Brentford’s hopes of keeping their French defender are further diminished with their Sky Bet Championship rivals Aston Villa also being interested in the defender and could also make a move this summer.

For Barbet, either team could be a great opportunity. Moving to the Premier League would be a tough thing to turn down for a defender who’s never played in the division and at Newcastle he could get regular first team football. And even if that doesn’t work out, a move to Aston Villa would likely see Barbet’s wages go up and give him a better chance of getting promoted to the Premier League than he would if he stayed in West London with Brentford.
