According to a report from the Daily Mail, Wigan Athletic have opened talks over a new deal with winger Gavin Massey, as they look to fight off interest from fellow Championship sides Nottingham Forest and Queens Park Rangers.

The Daily Mail has reported that amid interest from Nottingham Forest and Queens Park Rangers, Wigan Athletic have opened talks with winger Gavin Massey over a new deal.

Massey is reportedly keen on staying with Wigan Athletic – regardless of whether they stay in the Championship or not. However, it isn’t stopping QPR or Forest from maintaining an interest in potentially securing the 26-year-old’s services for next season.

He is out of contract at the end of the current campaign, so the Latics are looking to tie him down to a new deal as soon as possible.

Massey started his career with Premier League side Watford, signing a professional deal with the club in 2010 after progressing through the youth ranks at Vicarage Road. He was then sent on loan to Wealdstone, Yeovil Town and Colchester United – who he went on to join on a permanent basis in 2012.

The winger enjoyed a successful four-year spell with Colchester, playing in 178 games in all competitions. He bagged 21 goals and provided 21 assists over the course of four seasons with the club. Massey went on to spend a season with Leyton Orient in League Two, before earning a move to Wigan Athletic upon Orient’s relegation.

Since moving to the DW Stadium, the former Watford youngster has played 63 games, picking up eight goals and eight assists along the way. Wigan will be hoping that he can stay beyond the end of this season to add to his current tally of appearances, goals and assists.
