Middlesbrough striker does not regret leaving Manchester United

Middlesbrough’s Ashley Fletcher has told the The Sun, with comments being reported by Gazette Live, that he does not regret leaving Manchester United back in 2016.

After initially being at Bolton Wanderers, Fletcher would become part of the famed Manchester United academy and was tipped for big things. He would get his first taste of first-team football while out on loan at Barnsley and it was this spell that would change the direction of his career. He didn’t want to return to playing developmental football, so rejected a new contract at Manchester United and instead moving to West Ham United.

However, it can’t be said that everything has been amazing for Fletcher since. He struggled at West Ham, never even scoring a league goal for the Hammers and would move to current club Middlesbrough in 2017. But even this spell as not gone brilliantly as he was shipped out to their local rivals Sunderland for the second half of last season.

Despite a mixed time away from Old Trafford, Fletcher doesn’t regret leaving. He said: “Maybe I might still be at Man United but I needed to put myself through a learning experience, and what I know is that I will always have that Man United stamp,”

“Wherever you go, you take it with you. And it’s not just the football, it’s the morals, the lifestyle, how you are brought up in the game, it’s all of it.”

“It’s a huge thing for someone to come through the United academy.”

“They used to say that me and Marcus (Rashford) looked like brothers. What we are is brothers in arms because we came up through the same route.”

“And I’d like to think that Man United stamp will help me help Boro now.”
