Why unity is needed at Millwall now more than ever.

It’s been a tough season for Millwall. Last season’s 8th placed finish has made them victims of their own success.

Millwall had a superb 2017/18 season, has this made them a victim of their own success? Some will say yes and some would say no but the majority of people including most of the fan base would say yes. After the 3-0 defeat to Fulham in April last year Millwall’s play-off hopes effectively ended, bringing and end to what had been a sensational second half of the campaign. That run included a club record equalling 6 away wins in a row.

That run gave Millwall fans a lot of confidence going into this season. There was confidence that The Lions could consolidate themselves in mid-table and not wait until January for an away win. However, It took until New Years Day for the first away win of this season a 3-2 win at bottom of the table Ipswich. Form wise it’s been difficult. Millwall sit in 20th place in the Championship table and just a point above the bottom three.

The discontent from the fans has begun to show in recent weeks. Fans voiced their frustrations after the recent 3-1 home defeat to Preston, a game in which Millwall were 3-0 down inside 26 minutes. Their discontent was once again voiced after last Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at Hull. On Saturday league leaders Norwich came to town and also left with a 3-1 victory, although their was an acknowledgement that it was an improved performance.

Reasons for Positivity

Despite all the negativity, Millwall’s safety is still in their own hands. They face a big afternoon at Bolton on Saturday. A win would see Millwall move 11 points clear of their relegation rivals and all but end any hopes Bolton have of catching The Lions. What is needed at a time like this is unity. Everyone knows what a united Millwall fan base can produce. Just look at the FA Cup 4th round tie against Everton. A strong Millwall crowd especially at home can cause problems for any team.

The unity between the fans and the players was a major part of the magical run that saw Millwall almost make the Championship play-offs last season. Unity between the fans and the players could well be what keeps Millwall in the Championship. While the league must take priority, there is still the small matter of an FA Cup quarter final to come.

The main message here is unite and fight the battle together.
