Sheffield United announce long-term deal for star defender

Sheffield United have announced that star defender Jack O’Connell has signed a contract extension, running through until the summer of 2023.

Sheffield United announced on Thursday morning that they have tied down defender Jack O’Connell to a new deal with the club, running through until the summer of 2023.

The Blades confirmed the extension on their club website after it was reported yesterday that the two parties had come to an agreement.

The deal sees him join fellow first-team stars Billy Sharp, Enda Stevens and David McGoldrick in committing their long-term futures to the club.

Speaking to the club website, O’Connell spoke of his joy regarding his new deal at Bramall Lane and is excited to see what the future holds for him at the club.

“I’ve really enjoyed my football since arriving almost three years ago, it has been a tremendous journey and who knows how far we can go?”, O’Connell said.

“We have been chatting about a new contract for a while and I’m delighted it has been completed. Now the full concentration is on the football.

“The fans have been brilliant since the day I have arrived, this is a fantastic club and with David McGoldrick, Enda Stevens and Billy Sharp all signing in recent weeks, it shows how much everyone wants to be here and hopefully enjoy more success.”

O’Connell has been a mainstay in Chris Wilder’s side since his arrival from Brentford in 2016. The defender has played 130 games for the club, helping Blades win promotion back to the Championship in his first season with the club. He has since helped them push up the table and in with a chance of winning the title and promotion to the top flight.

The 24-year-old will be hoping he can continue to help push the club forward as they battle for promotion to the Premier League in the club’s remaining 12 games.
