Peterborough United announce termination of defender’s contract as FA issue four-year ban

Peterborough United have announced that defender Josh Yorwerth’s contract with the club has been terminated with immediate effect, amid a charge from the FA.

Peterborough United announced on their club website on Tuesday afternoon that they have terminated the contract of defender Josh Yorwerth after he received a charge from the FA.

The statement writes that the FA has charged the 23-year-old for evading an anti-doping test and taking cocaine, leading to a four-year ban.

The club released a statement regarding the matter on Tuesday afternoon, saying:

Peterborough United Football Club have been working with Josh Yorwerth over the past few months alongside the PFA to try and help him overcome a number of personal issues.

“The board of directors have been very supportive of him during this case and a representative of the football club has been in constant dialogue with Josh throughout the whole process.

“However, following the two charges made against Josh (one for evading an anti-doping test and the other for taking cocaine) and the four-year ban issued, the football club wishes to confirm that his contract will be terminated.

“The football club wishes Josh well with his recovery and for his future and hope he continues to get the support he needs from those in a position to help.”

Prior to his absence, Yorwerth had played for the club on three occasions, featuring twice in League One and once in the EFL Cup. He was one of Steve Evans’ many summer signings, joining from Crawley Town during the summer transfer window.

In his time at Crawley before his move to London Road, Yorwerth played 91 times for the club over the course of three seasons at Broadfield Stadium. The Welshman spent his youth career with Cardiff City but didn’t make any first team appearances during his time with the club.
