Aston Villa set to keep promising defender after staving off interest from AC Milan

Aston Villa youngster Mungo Bridge is set to remain at Villa Park, after the club fought off interest from Italian giants AC Milan.

According to The Sunday People (via Birmingham Live), Aston Villa youth defender Mungo Bridge is expected to stay with the Championship side after they staved off interest from Italian giants AC Milan.

AC Milan manager Gennaro Gattuso was keen to bring in the defender on a professional deal and was willing to match the demands of Villa in order to secure the 18-year-old’s signature. However, it was Aston Villa who emerged out on top in the battle for Bridge, and he is now set to remain at Villa Park.

The defender has mainly featured for the club’s Under-18s side throughout this season but has made his way into the second string side on one occasion. He played 45 minutes in Villa Under-23s’ 2-1 win over Middlesbrough Under-23s, also making the bench in 3-0 loss to Stoke Under-23s.

Featuring at both centre-back and left-back, Bridge has played six times for Villa’s Under-18s so far this season (Transfermarkt). In the 2017/18 campaign, the 18-year-old played 12 times, playing in a host of positions. After playing at centre-back, left-back and even left-midfield throughout last season, it now seems he has nailed down a place in the heart of defence.

After catching the eye of AC Milan, it will be interesting to see if Bridge makes his way into the first team picture in any of the remaining 13 Championship games before the season comes to an end.
