Leeds United announce strong U-23 side as duo step back into it

Leeds United are a club whose fortunes have been reborn since the Whites employed Argentinian coaching legend Marcelo Bielsa.

The first-team have become a side reborn, like a phoenix rising from the ashes of mediocrity. Bielsa has taken the bulk of a side that finished a miserable 13th last season and turned them into table toppers.

Not only that, but Bielsa has also seen his footballing ethos adopted at all levels of the club. His high-pressing, play-it-from-the-back mentality has percolated all the way down through the age groupings at the West Yorkshire club.

Bielsa is also a great believer in using the Under-23s at Leeds United to keep players on the fringes of the first XI match fit and active. It is also the Under-23s, coached by Carlos Corberan, where players returning from injury are given game time.

That’s the case tonight as Leeds United’s Under-23s take on their Notts County counterparts at Nethermoor, the home ground of local non-league neighbours Guiseley.

It’s a strong line-up for the ‘young’ Whites tonight with the likes of Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Tyler Roberts, Izzy Brown and captain-for-the-night Jamie Shackleton turning out. However, the bigger news was the easing back from injury layoffs of Stuart Dallas and Gaetano Berardi.

It’s been a frustrating season for injuries for the Whites and their fans with player after player hitting the treatment tables. Berardi and Dallas both featured for a planned 30-minute spell in the game, before being replaced by Aapo Halme and Ryan Edmondson respectively.

It was fringe first-teamer, and Chelsea loanee, Izzy Brown who opened the scoring for Leeds United. He converted a penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way, after he was bundled over in the area.

Leeds United seemed to attack at will, pulling their opponents in all directions. However, visitors Notts County pulled themselves back into it with a wonderfully hit free-kick to level the scores at 1-1.

It continued to be a to-and-fro game, with Leeds United driving most of the chances. After a series of near misses, it was a scrambled effort from striker Ryan Edmondson that saw the Whites run out 2-1 winners on the night.

However, the bigger news, and wider picture, on the night is the 30-minute recuperative run-out for Gaetano Berardi and Stuart Dallas.
