Derby County centre-back signing “close to being finalised”

Derby County manager Frank Lampard has revealed that the club are close to sealing the signing of free agent centre-back Efe Ambrose.

Derby County are closing in on the signing of Nigerian international centre-back Efe Ambrose, who is currently without a club.

Derby boss Lampard revealed in his pre-match press conference prior to Wednesday night’s clash with Championship strugglers Ipswich Town that a deal to sign Ambrose is close to completion. He told the Derby Telegraph:

“It’s close to being finalised but not quite done, so I don’t want to jump the gun.”

Derby are in need of a new centre-back to provide some much-needed cover for Richard Keogh and Chelsea loanee Fikayo Tomori. The pair are Derby’s only fit senior centre-backs available for selection, with Curtis Davies ruled out for the rest of the season and Alex Pearce on loan with fellow Championship outfit Millwall.

Davies is out for the season after suffering a ruptured achilles tendon in against Stoke in November.

Lampard was keen to bring in a new centre-back during the January transfer window. However, deadline day passed and Derby failed to bring in a centre-back. A move for defender Matty Pennington on loan from Everton was made, but he instead remained at Portman Road with Ipswich Town, where he will stay for the rest of the season.

Now, it seems that they are set to bring in Ambrose. The Nigerian international left Scottish side Hibernian at the end of January but hasn’t had to wait long to join a new club.
